fix(runner): keep a user-set Host header when fetching same-host favicons - #2698
httpx -favicon clones the page request to fetch the icon. Since #2369, the
clone's Host header is always replaced with the favicon URL's host. That
discards a virtual host selected with -H "Host: ..." or a vhost,ip input
whenever the icon is served by the target itself, so the icon is fetched from
the default host and its hash is wrong or missing.
This keeps a user-set Host for icons on the hostname the request was sent to,
while still using the icon's own host for redirect targets and CDNs, preserving
the fixes for #1333 and #2373.
Reproduction
A server that serves the icon only for the selected vhost:
# icon.ico is returned only when Host: vhost.test, 404 otherwise
httpx -u http://127.0.0.1:8080 -H "Host: vhost.test" -favicon -json
Before: no favicon hash (the request goes out with Host: 127.0.0.1:8080).
After: the mmh3 of the vhost's icon.Root causeHandleFaviconHash did:if resolvedURL.Host != "" && resolvedURL.Host != clone.Host { clone.Host = resolvedURL.Host}clone.Host is the Host selected for the page request (-H "Host: ..." or avhost,ip input), while resolvedURL.Host is the authority of the icon URL.For a relative icon both describe the same endpoint, but the Host header is auser choice, not something to derive from the URL. Comparing the two stringsconflates them and drops the virtual host.Fix- Detect whether the request's Host was set by the user (net/http seeds it
with the URL host otherwise).
- faviconRequestHost keeps that Host for an icon on the hostname the request
was sent to, and uses the icon URL host for an icon on another hostname
(redirect target or CDN), keeping #2373's behavior.
Tests
- TestFaviconKeepsCustomHostHeader: an httptest vhost server that 404s the
icon unless the request carries Host: vhost.test; fails on the previous
code and asserts the resulting mmh3/md5.
- TestFaviconRequestHost: table testfor same-host, redirect-target, CDN and
no-custom-Host cases.
- go test ./... and go test ./runner -run TestFavicon -race pass.
Notes
No behavior change for requests without a user-set Host: the icon URL host is
used exactly as before.
<!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --><!-- coderabbit-ai-generated:v1 -->## Summary by CodeRabbit***Bug Fixes*** Favicon requests now preserve a configured virtual host when fetching an icon from the same hostname as the original request. When an icon is hosted elsewhere, including after a redirect or on a CDN, the request uses that destination’s hostname. This keeps the request host aligned with the icon’s location while retaining the configured host when the resolved icon URL has no hostname.
<!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai -->
The favicon request is made with a clone of the page request. Since projectdiscovery#2369
the clone's Host header is always replaced with the resolved favicon URL
host, which drops the virtual host selected by -H "Host: ..." or a
vhost,ip input when the icon is served by the target itself: the icon is
then requested from the default host, so its hash is wrong or missing.
Keep a Host header set by the user for an icon on the hostname the request
was sent to, and use the icon URL host for an icon on another hostname
(the target of a redirect or a CDN), which keeps the fix for projectdiscovery#2373.
Favicon requests now preserve an explicit Host header for same-host icons. For icons on another hostname, the request uses the resolved icon URL’s host. Tests cover host selection and verify favicon hashes.

Summary
Select and verify favicon request host runner/runner.go, runner/favicon_test.go
The favicon request path records the explicit Host and original request hostname. It selects a host based on the resolved icon URL. Tests cover explicit and implicit host cases, redirects, CDN icons, and favicon hashes.
projectdiscovery/httpx#2691: Adds pinned-host handling for Host and SNI across requests and redirects, which is related to favicon virtual-host selection.
projectdiscovery/httpx#2668: Adds IP-pinned requests that retain the target hostname, including favicon requests that reuse request context.
With redirect following enabled, some favicon requests may use the default virtual host after an absolute same-host redirect, producing an incorrect favicon result; this is a bounded follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

A rabbit checks the favicon’s route The Host header stays in the right place Same hostname, the custom value remains New hostname, its own name is sent Hashes match the tiny GIF The rabbit hops on, pleased with the test
The integration test covers -H "Host: ...", not the separate vhost,ip input path. The helper test does not create or send a request. A regression that drops target.CustomHost during favicon fetching can therefore pass both tests.
Add an integration case that enables VHostInput, supplies vhost,ip, and checks the favicon Host and hashes.
